According to figures from Israel, at least 98 Palestinian individuals have perished while detained since October 2023. An advocacy organization operating from Israel has reported that the actual figure is likely substantially larger, due to hundreds of disappeared detainees in Gaza.

Study Results

An updated study recorded casualties attributed to assault, failure to provide medical care, and malnutrition. Analysts employed transparency petitions, forensic reports, and testimonies with attorneys, advocates, family members, and witnesses.

Government bodies released complete data limited to the first eight months of the conflict. Throughout these months, official figures indicate an unprecedented fatality rate among Palestinian detainees, equating to a life lost each 96 hours.

Recent Figures

Official armed forces finalized information on detention fatalities for May 2024, and the prison service by September 2024. Investigators documented a further 35 fatalities in custody following these timeframes and verified them with Israeli authorities.

Despite the total number of casualties documented being much greater than previous assessments, it probably does not reflect the entire scope of losses among Palestinians, as stated by the director of the prisoners and detainees department.
