It has been 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing audiences to beloved figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
